It’s been a busy couple months at work and we decided we needed a team outing since it doesn’t happen often at all. Combined with birthdays, farewells and welcoming new starters, it was the perfect excuse to treat ourselves to a fancy lunch.
Masuya Japanese is located on O’Connell Street in the heart of Sydney.
Bookings are required because as you can see, there’s hardly an empty table during lunch service!
I love places that serve chilled water with pieces of lemon. It just makes it that little bit more refreshing!
Nasu Miso $9.80 (large)
A deep fried eggplant half is served with masuya’s original miso paste. This flavour combination is one of my all time Japanese favourites and it did not disappoint.
Agedashi Tofu $9.80 (large)
My work mates have never tried agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu with dashi soup) with some never even having Japanese before (gasps!). I am so glad they loved it, as did I. A super thin and crispy batter coating soft silken tofu sits in a fragrant dashi soup. Delicious.
Shogun Bento $30.80
And this is my lunch! A bento box filled with wagyu misoyaki beef, teriyaki chicken, tempura king prawns, assorted sushi, sashimi and a spider roll.
I couldn’t even decide where to even start! With everything being so fresh, it made the bento box even more delicious. My favourites would have the misoyaki beef and the tempura (and its sauce) – both cooked perfectly!
Chef’s Special Bento $33.50
My colleague goes for the Chef’s Special Bento with Wagyu misoyaki beef, grilled scampi, karaage chicken nanban style, grilled miso marinated fish filet, assorted tempura and sushi, a spider roll and Masuya’s original salmon carpaccio. I was told that the highlights of this bento was the scampi and salmon carpaccio.
Anago Eel Bento $28.80
My other colleague orders the bento with bbq sea eel on bed of steamed rice, assorted tempura, two kinds of sashimi, deep-fried tofu with special dashi broth & green salad. I managed to sneak a piece of that eel and oh me oh my it was fantastic! It was tender, it was smokey, it was sweet.
I think it’s safe to say everyone was very happy with their lunches, flavour and quality wise. The service at Masuya Japanese was impeccable and accomodating making the experience all the more enjoyable. I’ve been told dinner is just as good if not better, so I am looking forward to making my return.. one day.
