One cuisine that I don’t eat enough of is Malaysian. There’s not much on offer nearby home, but I feel (more like know) there is an abundance of it in the city. I have weekly laksa lunch dates with my sister (ipoh on york, jimmy’s recipe, hokka hokka) but that’s as far as it goes . The Boy and I are feeling adventurous so make the effort to go somewhere new – new cuisine (for him), new restaurant.. why not?
Petaling Street is situated on the very busy George Street around the Haymarket area.
The open style kitchen
The seating is similar to a hawker centre but is of course much more modern and spacious. We sat upstairs but I can only imagine what down stairs would be like during peak hour – buzzing and noisy, just like what Asia would be. Mind you I only discovered down stairs as I needed to use the bathroom. The area below is huge!
Hainanese Chicken Rice $10.80
The Boy goes for the hainanese chicken rice. Succulent boneless poached chicken is sitting in a pool of light soy sauce and topped with fresh coriander. On the side there are slivers of cucumbers with a chilli and garlic sauce. A bowl of chicken infused rice and soup completes the meal. It was all executed very well and it had the right flavours. A very impressive and memorable hainanese chicken rice, and one we talk about quite often.
Chicken Curry Laksa $10.80
My meal for the evening is the chicken laksa. The portion size is suprisingly big that it had me speechless. The bowl is filled with an aromatic, creamy coconut based soup with a spicy chilli hit, and plenty of both vermicelli and egg noodles. It’s topped with juicy and tender chunky chicken slices, fried shallots and fresh spring onions. It had all the right things that I look for in a laksa (please note I am no laksa connoisseur). I’m happy, very satisfied and so very full!
The prices may not be as cheap as the hawker centres in Asia but it sure is considered as a cheap feed here in Sydney. Decent portion sizes, great tasting food and friendly on the wallet ticks all the right boxes for me. I’d gladly make the return to try the plenty of other things on the menu.
