It is quite a task figuring out what restaurants to scrap off your to-eat list because of time restraints. Believe me, my list of restaurants to eat whilst in Melbourne was about a page long but sadly a 4 day trip did not allow me to eat everywhere.
What did make the cut was Gingerboy with a focus on a modern adaptation on the South East Asian hawker food and flavours.
Complimentary pickled cucumbers are served. A great starter to nibble on as our appetites are building up.
Seared Hervey Bay Scallops $16.50
Sweet and juicy scallops are seared giving a slightly caramelised and textural exterior. Unfortunately I don’t quite remember the dressing as it does change seasonally – my apologies.
Crispy Duck and Banana Blossom Salad with Ginger Nuoc Cham $16
When a menu items says crispy, that is in fact what we hope for. Success. Shreds of crispy duck is served on top of a textural banana blossom salad with a perfectly balanced nuoc cham dressing. A refreshing salad that kick started our taste buds.
Salt and Pepper Chicken Spare Ribs in Tamarind Hot Sauce $15
These chicken spare ribs had to have been our favourite dish of the night. That tamarind hot sauce was out of this world – tangy, slightly sweet and with a firey spice. It paired well with the juicy chicken that was nearly falling off the rib bones.
Crispy Fried Sweet Corn Cakes $8.50
I couldn’t help but to order these corn cakes as a side. Crunchy on the outside with a light and fluffy center filled with plenty of sweet corn kernels.
Red Duck Leg Curry with Thai Basil, Coconut Cream and Shallots $39.50
For our main we opt to share the red duck curry. It was full of flavour and the duck was incredibly tender but it was chilli, even for me who can handle quite a bit of spice. The coconut cream and lychees added a nice sweetness to the curry, but not enough to offset the spice for us.
Overall the flavours were great at Gingerboy and all dishes were well executed. The prices however I found to be a little bit steep, especially the curry for its portion size, but still tasted great despite the mass chilli hit.
After dinner we strolled around and ended up at Federation Square. We sat down in silence and just enjoyed each other’s company whilst watching the crowd go by. It was a beautiful night. Melbourne, you are one hell of a stunner.
