The winter chills have begun in Sydney and what better way to begin the season than with a perfect winter warmer remedy – pho.
I usually don’t eat pho out very much but because we were on a family day out and the nephews were craving it we went to An Restaurant (formerly known as Pho An) which happened to be their go to place anyway.
The restaurant was a lot bigger than I expected. There’s plenty of seats but it all filled up in no time. The turnaround of customers was rather quick so the wait time isn’t all that long really.
Yes An Restaurant only sells pho. I don’t see anything wrong with that!
Complimentary herbs, bean sprouts and limes
Mind you this was given between 3 of us to share. A bit skimpy I’ll say, but lucky for my siblings I don’t eat the bean sprouts. I find it a bit ridiculous that they charge for a small bowl (for parents to share with their kids) and for extra veggies but I guess they drew the line somewhere.
Number 10, Large – Pho Dac Biet
On the menu it is called beef pho with beef combination, but you get the drift. It has all the beef goodness – rare beef, cooked beef and beef tendon, with tripe, ad they are definitely rather generous with the meats. No wonder why my nephews love it here, they’re the biggest smallest meat eaters I know!
The fragrant broth is very clear (and not murky like some places can be) and is very clean on the palette. It’s beefy yet all the aromatic spices come through beautifully. It’s definitely one of the better pho broth’s I’ve had, up there with Pho Tau Bay.
Noodles are cooked well, still retaining a bite. I struggled finishing my large portion, but it just seemed so silly to pay $1 less for the medium. It made no sense!
I really enjoyed eating the pho here at An Restaurant but I have to say I still prefer to eat my Dad’s home made version. No doubt I’m being biased but I can’t help it if Dad can make a mean pho ;)
It just so happened Dad made a massive batch of his pho last night.
And here are a few more photos of the many other times he makes his specialty:
How fitting is the shirt? hahaha!
