The friends and I came across Cookies Lounge Bar one pleasant Saturday afternoon. A pub session was in order for the boys and this was the closest thing to us at the time. Little did we know it was essentially a pub which served food too. Perfect timing as our bellies were calling us in for lunch.
The bar (and many other tenants) is located where the former Arnott’s Factory use to be, which the area is now called the Bakehouse Quarter. You can definitely feel that warehouse/factory type vibe from the atmosphere of the bar. I love that rustic/industrial feel.
The waitress kindly brings over the chalkboard specials to us. Now that’s pretty good service.
Salt and Pepper Squid Salad $16
I go for a salad with salt and pepper squid, watermelon, coconut, carrots and cucumbers tossed in a lemon dressing. The squid was cooked well and the flavors of the fruit actually was a pleasant suprise. The tang of the lemon dressing really topped it all off.
Chicken Cajun Wrap $15
Chicken tenders are marinated with a dry cajun rub and put in a toasted wrap with veggies and honey mustard sauce. The boys felt guilty over the many drinks they’ve already had so they thought to go for a healthy option, and it was!
Beef and Guinness Pie served w/ chips $17
The pie of the day is a beef and guinness pie. A hearty, chunky and flavoursome filling with a beautiful crispy yet flakey layer of pastry on top is served with a side of crunchy fries. A truly well made pie, and a huge one at that. It could have filled up 2 appetites. The beer flavour was subtle and I think it helped to enrich the sauce and make the beef tender.
Cookie’s Works Burger $16
The works included a beef pattie (somewhere), cheese, bacon, egg, pineapple and salads with chunky fries. This burger could not be held with two hands without anything falling out. I was told the pattie was juicy and the egg yolk was still runny – that’s a win win situation right?
Steak Sandwich $16
Now this is a towering sandwich using 3 slices of bread with a medium cooked steak (they were spot on), caramelised onion, bacon and tomato relish. The boy struggled to even fit this in his mouth so he had to deconstruct it to eat it. But he said it was delicious because the steak was the star of the show.
Home made Lasagne with chips and salad $17
A massive bowl of lasagne is bubbling away as it gets placed in front of us. Thank goodness it wasn’t frozen out of a packet. There was plenty of meat layered in between the pasta sheets and a generous layer of bechamel sauce and cheese on top. It was one of the better lasagnes we’ve all had at a restaurant.
The chips here at Cookies are fan-bloody-tastic. Chunky, golden and crispy while still fluffy in the middle! Ohhhhhhh so goooooood.
All dishes came out as a generous serving and matching the price tag. Everything was made fresh and it was all oh so tasty. We’ve been back several times now and it’s no wonder why. Whilst the boys down a few schooners, I’ll be happy to go for a good feed.
