A free Saturday calls me rounding up some of my girls for a much needed catch up. Being the undecisive bunch of ladies we are, I go ahead and suggest a couple places. A trek to Surry Hills is always on the cards, but it’s just a matter of where. Decisions, decisions. And the winner is Orto Trading Co.!
There is an online menu which allows us to think about what to order in advance. There’s always plenty of umms and ahhs at the table, but the online menu makes us just as indecisive anyways.
I absolutely fell in love with the look of the open bar. I adored the jars filled with fresh flowers hanging – it created a rustic yet homey atmosphere. It was a really welcoming place.
Freshly Squeezed Juices $6.50 each
L to R: Apple & Mixed Berry
Pineapple, passion fruit, apple and lime
Orange, apple & Strawberry
We notice a lot of people around us having these colourful drinks with paper straws, and we all wanted one too! Their juices are so damn good. Each was tasty and delicious in its own way. Really, how can you go wrong with freshly squeezed juice?
Despsite being cute and pretty, I did find the paper straws started to get soggy after a little while – I think I prefer plastic straws if I’m going to be taking my time sipping a very decent sized drink.
Our Spread of Food
Sweet Corn Fritters $18
The sweet corn fritters are served with a market fish, avocado ceviche with vine cherry tomatoes. I’ve never had corn fritters before (but have heard so much about Bills’ ones) and I thought they were well balanced with the lightness and acidity of the ceviche. The other girls thought there wasn’t enough corn in the fritters, that they were a bit heavy and didn’t compare to Bills’.
Baked Eggs $18
A rustic pan of baked eggs is served with sobrasada, roast capsicum, fior de latte, roasted tomatoes and sourdough. It had good, hearty flavours like most baked eggs do, however this one was quite oily. There was a layer of oil sitting on the top and it was not pleasant. Luckily there was soughdough to help soak up the flavoured oil, but nonetheless, a little too much for a pan of baked eggs. I’d hope this was a one off thing.
Breakfast Platter $17
I go for the breakfast platter with boiled eggs, bruschetta fingers and house made muesli with fruit. I have to say, being the gym junkie and relatively healthy person I am Monday to Fridays, the house made museli won me over. There was a great mix of grains and nuts. It had texture and most of all delightful flavour. The dollop of yoghurt was refreshing, as was the fruit – I was so happy to see figs in the bowl :)
Oozy yolk – yes! The bruschetta fingers were too big for the eggs, so found myself eating all the elements separately. Some freshly cracked pepper and a sprinkle of salt goes a long way with eggs. Mmm, delicious!
What a gorgeous little place Orto Trading Co is. I absolutely love the freshness of the produce used, and they definitely shine through both their juices and meals. The decor really seems really fitting also. I’ll need to make a return for some of the burgers, seems to be a favourite amongst the crowd. Now, the big question is, when?!
