Just a quick post on yet another newbie around Canley Heights – welcome Le Caravelle, an extension of Holy Basil. Residing right next door to Holy Basil, Le Caravelle is more of a wine/tapas bar rather than another Lao/Thai restaurant. Also available are a variety of cakes and treats, as well as frozen yoghurt and gelato.
A few friends and I decide to drop by for some dessert since we were nearby.
The decor is much more suited to the wine/tapas bar theme but the menu seems it has a wider range than just tapas.
Cake & Gelato – Large $9.90
I’m intrigued by the ricotta cheesecake that they have on the menu. Could it be the infamous Pasticceria Papa ricotta cheesecake? Apparently so, but I don’t remember it tasting like that for some reason :( Whoever it was from, it was still a decent ricotta cheesecake, though I think there may have been a tad too much pastry, or it could have been the slice I was served. It was rather thick and found my fork scraping inside the pastry for the ricotta innards. Mmm.
For my 2 scoops of gelato I opt for pandan & coconut and salted caramel. They were both amazing and the flavours really came through. It was really flavoursome, and eventually the sweetness overpowered the subtle ricotta flavour of the cheesecake. A sip of water in between each spoonful was definitely required.
Deep Fried Ice Cream $13.90
Does this look familiar? Yes, that’s because it is Holy Basil’s signature Deep Fried Ice Cream. Seems being next door even allows for the same dessert to be on the menu – they’d be crazy not to. As always, the pastry is deep fried long enough for it to become delicate and crispy, whilst the ice cream inside remains relatively firm. The butterscotch sauce adds another sweet element, whilst the toasted coconut and nuts adds texture. I’ve had this too many times and always, it brings a smile to my face, even if at a different restaurant to Holy Basil :P
Whilst we only had dessert, our first impressions of Le Caravelle are pretty decent. Our next visit will have to be a proper sit down meal with some tapas, and possibly some wine.
