El Loco at the House, Sydney

21 Jan

A collaboration between the Merivale Group and the Opera House sees a pop up El Loco location with one of the best views of our Sydney Harbour on the Western Broadwalk. Mexican Cantina style food with an incredible view? There’s not much more that can be asked for.

El Loco at the House

El Loco at the House is only operating for 3 short weeks from January 4 to 28, 2013 from 10am until late and is opened 7 days.

El Loco at the House - The Opera House

The hottest day ever recorded in Sydney was the day I had planned to make my way to the Opera House. Even at around 5pm, temperatures were still looming around the 33 degree celcius mark.

El Loco at the House

There are different huts for food and drinks to be ordered. The food is pumped out very quickly with a relatively quick wait. The bars on the otherhand were a different story. With the heat, it was expected everybody was after a cold, refreshing beverage.

El Loco at the House - Cocktail

Pink Cuco $13.50

I bump into some people I know (luckily) so have company until my own friends arrive. As they order a cocktail and hot dogs, I try so hard to not inhale any smell because at this point I was so hungry I could have eaten my own arm.

The Pink Cuco has El Loco’s house slushy of Espolon Reposada Tequila, pink grapefruit and lime juices, homemade coriander and raw ginger syrup. Apparently this was a great, refreshing concoction.

El Loco at the House - Hot Dogs

El Loco Hot Dogs $10 each

El Loco at the House

This is me trying to avoid looking at people eat so was testing out a new app on the iPhone.

El Loco at the House

We took over an empty barrel – score. A genius idea if you can grab one because it becomes your table and you and your friends can gather round it.

El Loco at the House - Corona Bucket

A bucket of Coronas (4 bottles for $30) seems a popular choice to help cool down.

El Loco at the House - Corn Chips & Tacos

Corn Chips with guacamole and salsa $6; and Tacos $6

More friends pop up and they munch on corn chips and tacos for dinner. They stay safe and stick with the Carne Asada (beef) taco, Pollo (chicken) and I choose for them the Queso de Soya (Tofu).

El Loco at the House - Our Feast

Our barrel full of food!

After a couple hours of waiting around, I finally get to devour my own El Loco hot dog. I was so happy I felt like I was a kid in a candy store. It still tastes as good as I remember it to be and would gladly make the return for some more.

El Loco at the House - The View

View from El Loco at the House

There’s only a week left of El Loco at the House before it is no more. You get good food, the best view (hello, look at the photo above), a hip-and-happening lively atmosphere and if you really want to you can have a bit of a dance as there is a DJ that plays throughout the day. There really is no better combo to begin your weekend, or to chill out after a long hard day at work.

Too funny that we both did the post at the same time!

Can’t believe you had to brave the heat and on top of that you had to wait a couple of hours before it was your turn to eat! I would have been a very cranky girl!!!

p.s. i am loving the new look on your blog!!!

I’ve always wanted to visit El Loco and it’s great that they’ve opened a pop-up store right near the harbour bridge! Definitely a winner view ;) All that cheese has me wanting to eat a hot dog… And that drink looks so pretty in pink and refreshing!

I love this idea but I’m not sure I could have gone that day last week when the temperatures soared above reasonable levels. It was unbelievable. But I do love Mexican food and this looks really good so on a cooler day, I’ll give this a try xx
