In-N-Out Burger, Barstow – California USA

16 Jan

Getting back on track with my USA adventures, this one surely had to have a post on its own. For those that have travelled to the USA you’ve surely heard of IN-N-OUT Burgers. It is one of the biggest burger chains prodominantly in California (the west coast).

IN-N-OUT

The genius behind it all, Harry Snyder, developed the drive through concept in 1948 whereby customers would receive their food without having to step out of the vehicle and to that he also came up with a 2 way speaker device which explains the name of the enterprise.  So they say, the rest is history…

Open Kitchen

On our roadtrip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, we have an obligatory lunch pitt stop at In-N-Out Barstow. Sadly it was the only time I had In-N-Out throughout my whole trip and boy do I wish how things could have been different.

IN-N-OUT - Regular Soda

Regular Soda

America’s regular is Australia’s large – no kidding. Most of their fast food chains have unlimited refills of soft drink and/or juices.

IN-N-OUT - Burgers and Fries Animal Style

Our stash of food from the secret menu!

Secret, you say? Yes, a secret menu that isn’t displayed yet so many know about, through word of mouth I presume. These double double cheese burgers and fries are done animal style. What that means is that there’s an extra dollop of “spread” (which is very similar to a thousand island dressing), melted cheese and grilled onions. It sounds so simple but I promise you it is heavenly and necessary at that.

IN-N-OUT - Animal Fries

Fries, Animal Style

This only way In-N-Out fries should be eaten. You can ask for your fries to be cooked at different levels - I like mine well done for that extra crunch (I love my fries!!) however I think they only gave me regular cooked.

Patties can be cooked to preference also. I’m not sure what the exact term is but we requested for our patties to be cooked medium and I found that the meat patty was much more tender and it got to the point where it was melting in my mouth. Ohhh my.

A double double cheeseburger, fries and a regular drink is $6.45 for the meal. I think the price is ridiculously cheap, especially considering you get the lot! I can’t quite remember if there was an extra charge for animal style, but I’m sure there was, not much though.

Layers of goodness

There are many, and I mean many, burger chains out there in America. I have to say this is probably my favourite of them all. There is already 281 In-N-Out locations, with more to be in the works. I eat it each and every time I travel to the States; it is mandatory I have In-N-Out at least once. If I don’t, well, let’s not ever think of that scenario.

How I wish I could have me one of those burgers and fries animal style right now. I still haven’t been able to find anything in Sydney remotely close to this heavenly fast food chain. So the hunt continues ….. but I doubt I’ll be successful.

I’ve heard that USA ‘must-haves’ are Shake Shack in the east and In-n-Out Burger on the west coast. You seem to have one of them covered, at least: those burgers and fries look amazing.

I’ve been to NYC but didn’t get the chance to try shake shack.

Mouth-watering photos Tina! I thought in-n-out was pretty good. But it sadly didn’t live up to the hype for me :( (sowee, don’t hate me *ducks and cover*). I do like the animal style fries though :)

It was. I couldn’t finish my double double. I usually go for the one patty cheeseburger. There’s such a thing as a 4 by 4!!

    Dear Tina,

I love the term “animal style” and that burger does look delicious. I thought those brown bits were crispy bacon but I think you are right in the secret is really that wicked mayo sauce that makes this burger so enticing.

Oooooh bacon isn’t a bad idea for in n out to add to their burgers. I may have to put forward a suggestion ;)

Looks great and sooo cheap! I love the concept of the secret menu as well hehe and the animal style fries :D Hopefully something similar will open up in Sydney one of these days!

There was a pop up in n out store a while ago. I’m not too sure how that went to be honest.
