Bon Gal Bi, Strathfield

4 Jan

To me, Strathfield is one of those suburbs that is always buzzing from dinner time until late at night, especially now with the many frozen yoghurt joints as a go to place for dessert. I can’t even keep up with how many froyo places there are (and in the one block!). It surely is a huge craze. Hanging with another couple, we wander the Strathfield streets and randomly end up at Bon Gal Bi Korean BBQ Restaurant on Churchill Avenue.

Bon Gal Bi

We opt for the a la carte menu as opposed to using the BBQ grill only because we were hungry hippos and wanted our food served to us already cooked. This is the first time I’ve eaten at a Korean restaurant without eating Korean BBQ. Our friends are local so we leave the ordering to them.

Bon Gal Bi - Beef Bulgogi

Beef Bulgogi

A huge hot plate of beef bulgogi is served on our tiny little table. An abundance of fresh, crunchy vegetables are cooked with extremely flavoursome and tender pieces of grilled beef.

Bon Gal Bi - Chicken and Cheese

Chicken with Cheese

Now THIS is what I’m talking about. Another huge hot plate arrives at the table but this one is covered in delicious cheeeeeeeeese! Bite sized chicken pieces lay somewhere underneath all that cheese goodness with some onion slices, snake beans, capscium and mushrooms. It needs to be eaten rather quickly, otherwise the cheese begins to cool down and solidify. I loved grabbing some chicken with the cheese stretching and going all over the place. It was amazing.

Bon Gal Bi - Seafood Hot Pot

Seafood Hot Pot

This hot pot was sizzling like mad, you can still see it bubbling in the photo above. This bad boy not only had a huge kick of spice but the temperature would just not cool down, which left most of our tongues stinging and burnt, unfortunately. Luckily I have a pretty good tolerance for both so ate the bulk of it – it was delicious! This dish would work perfectly with a bowl of rice on the side which would offset the spice and heat that little bit.

Bon Gal Bi - Bibimbap

Bibimbap

The Boy was very excited to try his very first bibimbap. As gorgeous as it looked that’s where it all ended. It was quite bland and we felt there was just nothing to it. We whack in a bucket load of their chilli sauce so that it added some flavour. Needless to say, the boy was disappointed (lucky there was all the other good food to make up for it).

We ordered enough for 5-6 people, not realising how big each of the dishes were. We ate as much as we could and did a pretty good job without too many leftovers.

We noticed that there was a whole page on the menu with “new items coming soon” including their house special Korean Fried Chicken. I definitely need to make a return so I can try me some of that…..

I’m not sure if it had vents but it had outdoor seating area with park benches? A little weird though hey. Yep, that chicken and cheese is ridiculously awesome.

I never get to Strathfield but, oh good lord, I seriously want to tuck into that chicken & cheese dish!

I’m not in strathfield much either but there are so many hidden gems there! Well, they aren’t hidden because there’s restaurants everywhere. It’s just a matter of which to walk into.

I agree. It seems like froyo places are the new macarons/cupcakes. I’m in love with Korean food at the moment. I was over at NaruOne the other day pigging out on Korean Fried Chicken and couldn’t get enough! So hungry after this post hahaha

I am a bit over the froyo to be honest. It has been around for ages already. I don’t know why or how it all of a sudden became so popular. It’s like a new toy that hit the shelves! I’ve yet to hit naruone. I need to go, stat!

    Dear Tina,

That chicken with cheese looks interesting. We don’t go to Strathfield quite as often because neighbouring Burwood always seem more enticing with so many restaurants and cheap eats along the dining strip.

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 8 January, 2013 at 6:41 AM #

I’ve yet to fine around Burwood to be honest. Think ill need to get some recommendations off you :)

I often do Korean without BBQ – love hot stone bibimbap and seafood pancakes and stuff like. And you end up a little less smokey-smelling (not much less really…)

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 8 January, 2013 at 6:42 AM #

Haha we were in hopes of smelling a little less of BBQ as well. But it doesn’t happen as others are ordering it anyways. One can only try ..

Shame that the bibimbap was plain, it’s usually one of my go to dishes for korean!

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 8 January, 2013 at 6:46 AM #

I love Korean cuisine, eat it weekly – and hardly ever go the BBQ route! Strathfield is my local, grew up there & remember when there were much less dining options. The chicken & cheese dish amazing – something I’ve never tried before!

It’s not the most popular restaurant on the strip not is it huge but it definitely is worth a try!
