With the Boy being a huge fan of Italian food, it’s no wonder why he brings a bunch of us to Pizza Mario. It was proclaimed to be in the top list of Sydney’s best pizzas so he just had to try it (see Sydney Morning Herald article here).
I’ve no idea how the Boy managed to drag out a bunch of the boys, but I am so thankful he did because it meant more for us all to try :)
Salsicce con Cime di Rape $23.50
This pizza consists of mozzarella, spicy sausage and cime de rape which is a form of broccoli. The toppings sit on a thin piece of dough which is light, crispy on the bottom with a slight chew – the way it is done in Italy.
Gorgonzola $23.50
This was one of my favourite pizzas with mozzarella, gorgonzola, mushroom and ham. Simple ingredients bring out the best of some flavours. The saltiness of the ham and creaminess of the gorgonzola is offset by the subtle mozzarella and mushroom creating the perfect balance in flavours.
Calzone con Salame $21.50
To be a little different, we order a calzone, that is, a folded pizza, filled with ricotta cheese, buffalo mozzarella, salami, black pepper & tomato. Simple yet again and great tasting. I just personally found the ratio of crust to filling was overpowered by the crust.
Margherita con Ruchetta e Crudo $23.50
We simplify things down a little with a margherita pizza with the addition of prosciutto and rocket. This one seemed to be a hit with the boys as it had the most meat on it :P
Chalkboard Special – House Salad
To break the carbs up, we order a house salad. From memory it was simply rocket tossed in a home made vinaigrette, topped with pecorino cheese (I think).
Chalkboard Special – Home Made Lasagne
Something that caught my eye was the home made lasagne. I’m a sucker for lasagne as I just find it so comforting. I just had to get it. Sadly, our sad little piece of lasagne wasn’t accompanied by anything and it was a bit rough around the edges (burnt, really). I don’t think there was much love put into this piece of lasagne but the flavours were great. A fragrant tomato sauce layered in between soft and tender pasta sheets with meat and vegetable filled bolognese sauce.
Does Pizza Mario really produce some of the best pizzas in Sydney? Well, I don’t think I’ve tried enough to make a conclusion yet, but I do have to say the pizzas served here surely do remind me of the pizza served in Italy. It has been the most authentic Italian pizza I have eaten so far where the base is the star of the show and the topping is minimal but flavourful.
Now, the hunt continues on.. what pizza place shall we try out next?

Dear Tina,
I like the look of the Gorgozola and Margherita at this place – simple and with my favourite cheese.
One of my most memorable pizzas was the Bianca at Amici in Cammeray. The crust was super thin and crispy with simple ingredients of mozzarella, mushroom, prosciutto, shaved parmesan and the magical aromas of black truffle oil.

Thanks for the recommendation. I may just need to try it out! :)
I’ve heard so many great things about this place but still have yet to make it here. For a second I thought this was just a meal for you and the Boy and I was thinking whoa you guys sure eat a lot lol!
I think I’d have a heart attack if Andrew ordered all of that just for the 2 of us haha
Ohhh pizza :) I really don’t eat enough Italian food hehe really should though cuz I love Italian pizza so much more than the American bastardised ones hehe having said that I confess I like Pizza Hut’s cheese stuffed-crust hehe :P
A shame that the lasagne wasn’t up to scratch and the sides do look burnt :( Doesn’t matter you can make it yourself hehe ~
Oh man. Stuff crust is so good. It’s even better in the states. It feels much more dirtier and oily but when you’re hungry everything tastes so good! Haha
The gonzola looks amazing! On the ‘top try’ list.
I love Napoli in Bocca (haberfield) also very authentic
On my list it goes. Thanks for the Rec :)
Ooh yum, I loooove pizza! They all look so good and cheeesy :) and I love the name (although it makes me think of Super Mario hehe). A shame the lasagne wasn’t great, I love a good lasagne too!
It really reminds me of the ones in Italy. Can’t explain it.
Hehe I like the sound of your new mission, to find the best pizza in Sydney! :P
Have you any recommendations Lorraine?
Friendly place and delicious traditional wood fired pizza. Last night we went there with a group of friends and tried a variety of pizzas. My favourite was the buffalo mozzarella, really good! Tiramisu was divine, too. We’ll definitely be back!
Didn’t get to try dessert. Think I will the next time :)
I’ve been on a very slow hunt for really good Neapolitan pizza in Sydney ever since getting back from NYC last year. I’ve been wanting to try Pizza Mario for the same reason and I’ve got to say the crust looks pretty good. I’ll let you know when I find my perfect pizza in this town.
I was amazed at any pizza joint in NYC. The best one I had was some random cart in town. Unbelievable!
I do love pizza crust! These all look yum! Good luck with pizza hunting :P
Haha thanks any recommendations? :)
I have been meaning to check out this place….
It’s definitely worth a try!
I’ve been meaning to get there forever. I feel the same way about lasagne as you do – though this one does look a bit sad…
It’s definitely a great spot! If you’ve been to Italy you’d know why we say its the closest thing we can get to what’s served in Italy
I love the look of these super authentic pizzas. Will definitely have to check this place out soon!
They definitely remind me of what’s served in Italy. I have yet to find a place that does it similar
They def look rustic and authentic. Might need ot give these guys a go!
I think they’re pretty good and it really does take me back to Italy!
