Cantina Mobil Food Truck

4 Jun

Finally, part of the food revolution has hit us with some Sydney Food Trucks roaming the Sydney streets (only at council approved locations of course)! I do like to refer to them as kitchen on wheels which they are essentially. The first of which was to launch was Cantina Mobil, offering mexican treats and non alcoholic sangria (which I sadly didn’t get to try).

Cantina Mobil

They have been around for a while now and I’ve only been able to hunt one down. Thanks to my lovely friend twitter (@SydneyFoodTruck), Phuoc, Raff and Maria (and the perfect location) I was able to finally get my fix of some street food.

Cantina Mobil

One of the council approved locations is Queen’s Square (near Hyde Park) and thankfully for me work is nearby. There was no question that I was going to have a peak despite having dinner plans later that evening. I see flashing lights and this customised yellow van – yep, that’s Cantina Mobil alright.

Cantina Mobil - Soft Sheel Taco with Chipotle Beef

Soft Shell Taco with Beef Chipotle $5.00

‘What’s your style?’ the menu asks you – soft of hard shell taco. I am and have always been a soft shell taco kinda gal and so without question I opt for the soft shell taco. The filling is what gets me. Do I go for the beef chiptole, achiote chicken or pinto beans? Beef it was only because the words ‘slow roasted’ won me over.

It is an amazing little taco that is jam packed with flavours and gives off fireworks in your mouth. The beef is slow roased and shredded and is unbelievably tender and melts in your mouth. It is served with a red cayenne chilli sauce with lime which absolutely puts the icing on the cake. It’s tangy, its sweet, and has a kick. The lime tops it all off as it gives the zing and lightens it up. I demolished it and was looking for more!

Cantina Mobil - Chilli Corn

Chilli Corn $4.00

Seeing as though I had dinner plans a couple hours later, I thought it was best to try only one thing. Considering how good it sounded, looked and tasted, I couldn’t just walk away. On order was the chilli corn. Plump, sweet kernals of corn were dressed with three types of chilli and cumin.

Cantina Mobil - Soft Shell Taco with Achiote Chicken

Soft Shell Taco with Anchiote Chicken $5.00

I got the chance to have a chat with Stephanie, one of the owners of Cantina Mobil, and she is an absolute doll. They have been at it for several months now and have enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t wait to see what else Cantina Mobil have in store for us in the near future.

It was playing with my mind – what could the chicken taco taste like? Ahh screw it, I said to myself and ordered it anyway (tummy was happy, brain was not). This chicken was marinated and slow cooked, paid with a green jalapeno chilli sauce and corriander. Oh my wordddddddd (quoting Adam Richman of MVF again). Everything worked well like a match made in heaven! I can’t even describe it to you. It’s so good that you have to eat it yourself to know what my lack of words mean.

So which was my favourite out of the beef and chicken? Oh man, that’s a hard one but if I had to choose it would be the chicken but only by the teeniest tiniest margin, otherwise I would seriously have to say they were both fan-friggen-tastic!

Cantina Mobil - Sombreros

A few sombreros were worn and even Stephanie and Rodde got into the spirit as there was a photographer snapping away for an article that should appear in Sydney’s MX today or tomorrow (04/06/12 or 05/06/12). I may or may not appear in it =P

There are no set times or places in which these Sydney Food Trucks are operating. Your best bet is to follow Sydney Food Trucks on facebook or twitter for any updates, otherwise to individually follow all the participating food trucks.

Happy Chasing :D

Food looks fantastic, and such reasonable prices. I just wish the food trucks were easier to find…

You and me both. I was lucky I was already going to stick around the city that evening, otherwise I’m usually leaving the city by 4.30 to miss peak hour traffic. I live an hour away from the city so hate staying back if there’s no real need …

I’m REALLY hoping Cantina Mobil is coming to my work this week…they park in a park (that’s weird to write) near my office. Fingers crossed.

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 11 June, 2012 at 5:56 PM #

Do they park there when they aren’t operating or is it a council approved city location for food trucks? Stalk them mel :P

How fun! I made a corn salad that sounds similar to that and it’s always a huge hit! I’d love to try the slow cooked beef. Maybe the truck will pop up near me soon!

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 11 June, 2012 at 5:58 PM #

I hope the trucks pop up near me more often too as opposed to me chasing them ;P

  13. Vivian - vxdollface 7 June, 2012 at 2:49 PM #

Glad I didn’t try their corn though it does look fantastic.. I really really dislike cumin -.- but their chicken burritos are pretty delish!

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 11 June, 2012 at 6:01 PM #

The corn does have quite a strong cumin taste, so yes good thing you didn’t try it. Otherwise their fillings are all winners, IMO anyways. :D

Finally! It’s about time those food trucks got roaming in Sydney – they’re all the craze in the US and work so well there so I don’t understand why we don’t have them earlier haha!
