The Pie Tin, Newtown

29 Mar

It was time for another catch up with friends and what better way to do it than over some deeeeeeeeeelicious pies at the ridiculously awesome The Pie Tin in Newtown? There’s been a lot of talk about this pie place and I knew there was more than what just met the eyes (or ears for that matter). Pies? Pies. Surely a pie couldn’t be THAT good, or could it?

The Pie Tin

The Pie Tin is off King St, the main street that runs through Newtown. It is a relatively small bakery/cafe that has limited seating. It sure looks like a place that will easily fill up during lunch and even dinner.

The Pie Tin - Savoury Pies

There are no menus. There is no floor staff. You order, pay and pick up your meal at the counter. For a measly $10, you can select any pie (or sausage roll) in the heavenly showcase and 2 sides. Here’s the menu. For a place located in Newtown, might I say that it is very rare to find such a good deal like that!

The Pie Tin - Coffee

A regular skim cappuccino for $3 wins me over, and boy was it a great cup of coffee (and a generous serving too!). It had great flavour and was perfect for my Sunday lunch coffee fix.

The Pie Tin - Tender Steak Smokey Bacon Cheddar Cheese

Friend 1 opts for the tender steak, cheddar cheese & smokey bacon pie, with a side of potato salad and boston baked beans with speck/bacon.

The Pie Tin - Vege and Lentil with potato Top

Friend 2 opts for the vegetable & lentil pie with a potato top, with coleslaw and boston baked beans.

We didn’t really get on with sharing but I did manage to taste the boston baked beans and oh my oh my, they are some great tasting baked beans! It doesn’t have that sour taste like the ones at the supermarkets. It’s cooked in a rich tomato sauce with onions and capsicum which brings so much tasty goodness to the table.

The Pie Tin - Southern Style Slow Roasted Shredded Pork with Apple and BBQ Sauce

I choose the slow roasted shredded pork with apple & bbq sauce with a side of kumera mash and a leaf salad. When we got served with our plates, I was in awe. And I still couldn’t believe we got all that for $10. How good is that?

The Pie Tin - Innards of the southern style prok

This pie was to die for! The innards of the pie had generous amounts of juicy, succulent shredded pork, mixed in with a sweet but yet tangy apple and bbq sauce. With the first bite, you get a hit of cinnamon which is odd but then as you eat more and more it becomes the perfect flavour combination with the pork and apples. Oh it was soo good!

The Pie Tin - Dessert Pies

Dessert Pie Heaven! We were so full after having our pies and sides, but I was determined to try at least one dessert pie. How could you not by loooking at this display? I bet your mouth is salivating.. but don’t worry, mine is too ;)

The Pie Tin - Malteser Pie

All this for $6.50 – how can you say no?!?! This huge piece of malteser pie with a side of fresh cream can feed 2-3 people for dessert. I pretty much had to eat it all on my own as my two lady friends just could not eat any more. Well I forced them to try this insanely good pie and they thoroughly enjoyed it, however they just wished they weren’t so full so that they could eat more!

At the bottom of the pie is a chocolate biscuit layer. On top of that lays a very soft and velvety chocolate ganache (i think) with crush malteasers scattered on it. Next comes the malteser mousse type filling and finished with whole malteasers on top. It looks sickingly sweet but it’s not at all, not at all! The filling is light and airy with that malt and chocolate taste running through it. Oh myyyy it sure was one of the best pie desserts I’ve ever eaten.

The Pie Tin have how changed their trading hours to suit those who need a quick pie fix after a long hard day at work. If only I worked nearby or lived nearby I’m sure I would have tried every single item on that menu by now……

I have to agree. I love the extensive range of pies, both sweet and savory, that they offer! The hardest is to choose which ones :)
