Gumshara, Haymarket

21 Mar

Over the years, the Japanese cuisine has become increasingly popular in Sydney. Not only is it a search for the best sushi or takoyaki or agadeshi tofu but it’s also about the ramen. One place that is on everyone’s talk list is Gumshara.

Gumshara - Grilled BBQ Pork Skewer

Grilled BBQ Pork Skewer $2.50

A gal pal and I had to see what it was all about. We arrive at the Dixon Street food court quite early (considering we both finish work at an early-ish hour) and barely have to wait for our food. Of course, we order ramen but which one? There are a few on offer – miso, thin base soups, thick etc. We both settled for the tonkotsu ramen for our first taste.

I couldn’t surpass the sound of a grilled BBQ pork skewer so I added that to my order. Let me tell you, it has got to be the best tasting pork skewer I have ever eaten. Yes, it looks like it’s just the fat but don’t some argue and say that that is the best bit? It was grilled and bbq’d perfectly – the charred outside complimented the fatty, soft, mouth-melting inside.

So this is the ramen that many rave on about. It’s definitely not your average ramen that you’d expect. This big bowl of goodness is quite thick and holds a very rich pork flavour. The first taste was very, very interesting. The ramen was cooked so that it still had some body (not too soft), and I really enjoyed the soup base which had a strong, bold flavour. There were generous portions of sliced pork and bamboo. I also couldn’t help but order the flavoured egg (absolutely soft boiled – omg perfectly oozing yolk!!) for an extra $1.50. I gobbled that bowl right up wondering where it all went.

I would definitely go back to try the pork ribs ramen. Now that sounds like it would be one very grand feed :)

The ramen is seriously filling, but oh-so-good when it’s cold and miserable outside!

It Is that bowl full of comfort that we would all seek on that cold winters night!

Has to be the next thing I try from there. For such simple eggs I couldn’t believe how tasty they were!

That looks gorgeous! I’ve been an Ichi Ban Boshi fan for years, but I’m really tempted to try Gumshara.

Ichi ban Boshi restaurant is much better than the take away store in TGV food court. But I do like gumshara better :) personal pref

Please excuse my swears, but, FUCK YEAH GUMSHARA! This place is supreme. Do go back and try the pork spare rib ramen, it’s one of my favourite dishes in Sydney (it’s epic food coma territory, though!). Your photos are making me hungry ahhhh.

YUM! I love the thick soup :D I’ve had the pork ribs one to myself before and it’s a bit over the top for me, could have easily been shared between two. mm never had their pork skewers but that looks real good!

I’ll keep that as a side note. Hopefully the boy is with me when I eat that so he can eat what’s left heheh!

My friend raves about this place as being one of the best ramen places in Sydney.. I’m not a huge fan of ramen but winter’s coming soon so it’s time soon :D

    • Tina @ bitemeshowme 2 April, 2012 at 7:03 AM #

It’s always good to try some things :) I prefer udon myself because sometimes ramen just reminds me of instant noodles. But it still is yummy nonetheless

just like any other foodie i also love this place, but just wanted to say you make that skewer look like the sexiest piece of meat (or 2) with that opening photo.

like every other foodie I also love this place, but I just wanted to say that you make the skewered pork belly look like the sexiest piece of meat (or 2) ever with that opening photo.
